Application FAQ

Q: I cannot afford the course fee. Is there a possibility to reduce or waive the tuition fee?

A: Yes. Reduction and waivers for tuition fees will be awarded according to need and merit. Note that the relevant information will only be collected once you have been accepted to the course.

Q: Should I go to the pre-school?

A: The pre-school is optional, yet highly recommended for all students who do not have a strong quantitative background. A strong quantitative background means that you know at least one programming language, and have a solid basis in linear algebra and calculus.

Course FAQ

Q. Is it possible to come for only part of the course? (i.e. miss 1 or 2 days)?

A. No, we expect every student to be present for the full duration of the course.

Q. Is it possible for the course participants to bring family members along?

A. No, lodging and board is offered only for the students in the course.

Q. Do I get a room for myself or do I have to share?

A. Students will share twin rooms.

Q: Do I need to provide my own computer?

A: We strongly recommend bringing your own laptop if you own one. Students who do not have access to their own laptop will be provided a computer at the course.

Q: Are meals included in the course fee?

A: Yes, breakfast is offered at the hotel, and lunch and dinner during course days are provided. During the days off, you are on your own.

Travel FAQ

Q: How do you get from the hostel to the Champalimaud Centre of the Unknown?

A: A shuttle bus is provided to take you to and from the hostel to CCU.

Q: What if I want to come earlier or stay longer?

A: The course fee covers accomodation for the course period (Aug 11th to 31st) . If you wish to arrive earlier or depart later, we can help you with the arrangements, but you'll have to cover for the expenses yourself.

Q: How do I get to the Hotel from Lisbon Airport?

A: At the airport you can get a taxi, a bus or the metro.

By Taxi: Lisbon Airport is located almost in the center of the city and taxis are a fast way to reach the city center.They are lined up outside the terminals, and should cost between 10-15 €. We advise taking a taxi at the departures as there is no waiting line.

By Bus: It is also possible to take either the AeroBus or AeroShuttle bus services, which run between the airport and the city center. A ticket may be purchased directly from the driver and currently stands at 3.50 €. The buses run every 20 or 30 minutes and stop at important points in the city.

By Metro: Take the Red Line (Airport - São Sebastião) and get off at Restauradores station. From there you can walk accross the large Restauradores square (circa 120m) into the small Rua do Jardim do Regedor. A ticket may be purchased at a machine or at the ticket counter. See Metro plan below:
